Abstract:
In our interconnected world, a significant number of people across international borders settle into new areas and start new lives. Whether they are referred to as immigrants, migrants, or refugees, it is crucial to gain a deeper understanding of their health status, health practices, and health needs. Conducting research with this population group can be challenging due to language barriers, distrust of official entities, including researchers, and persistent trauma, among other factors. However, the importance of conducting research with these population groups cannot be overstated, as it directly impacts the health and well-being of these individuals and the communities they join. Research focusing on immigrants and refugees has the potential to make a significant positive impact on their lives. This chapter explores some of the salient issues facing researchers working with these populations and offers recommendations to conduct culturally appropriate research on immigrant and refugee populations. By implementing these strategies and actively engaging with immigrant and refugee communities, researchers can increase participation rates and ensure that research findings are representative and inclusive.
