Chapter 23 in Research Handbook on Health Education, Health Promotion and Diversity, 2025, pp 337-351 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Historically, people with disabilities have been excluded from society in numerous ways, including health research. People with disabilities experience poorer health, lower life expectancy, limitations regarding a wide range of health and health care needs, and limitations of inclusion in health research. Moreover, this population experiences ableism, discrimination, stigma, and continual barriers. These barriers include discriminatory practices, inaccessibility of health care, health care facilities, health information, and a lack of data collection and analysis of disability – all contributing to the health inequities faced by people with disabilities. This chapter aims to contribute to the scholarly literature regarding the importance of including people with disabilities in health research to strengthen the evidence base informing health care practices and systems, thereby mitigating inequity, inequality, ableism, and discrimination. Specific, targeted action to include people with disabilities is essential in advancing equity in health research.
