Chapter 3 in Research Handbook on Health Education, Health Promotion and Diversity, 2025, pp 26-44 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Qualitative research in health education involves the nuanced study of individuals’ experiences within health contexts. This chapter defines qualitative research and highlights its use in various health education contexts. Observation, case study, focus group, and interview research methodologies are described with health education examples. Ethical issues and possible preventive steps for ethical study are described within the planning, data collection, and dissemination phases of a qualitative study. As qualitative research focuses on the experiences of the participants as told by the participants rather than quantitative measures, data analysis regarding coding language and discovering themes is described. Various methods to increase the trustworthiness of a qualitative study's findings are also discussed.
