Culturally competent and responsive research in health education and health promotion
Raffy R. Luquis
Chapter 4 in Research Handbook on Health Education, Health Promotion and Diversity, 2025, pp 45-57 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
As the diversity of the world's population continues to increase, health educators and health promotion professionals must learn and engage in culturally competent and responsive research to understand health issues and to provide solutions to improve health inequities and disparities in the population. While the traditional research framework offers little regard for the involvement of participants in the research process, culturally responsive research establishes a relationship with the participants. It considers their cultural background as part of the research process. This chapter discusses culturally responsive research, culturally responsive evaluation, and ethics. Health educators and health promotion professionals must understand these concepts as they continue engaging in research practices.
