Social determinants of health and health promotion research

Javier Emilio Rodríguez Zabala, Luz Marina Alonso Palacio and Martha Peñuela-Epalza

Chapter 5 in Research Handbook on Health Education, Health Promotion and Diversity, 2025, pp 58-71 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: The present chapter aims to provide an overview of health promotion research into the determinants of health. However, the quest for holistic health promotion is built upon theoretical assumptions about health and justice. The authors present a review of the evidence supporting public health interventions into the social determinants of health and the importance of reflecting on philosophical assumptions that could permeate health promotion research. In addition, we introduce a framework to aid practitioners and researchers in understanding different types of health promotion projects and provide evidence of the growing interest in research into the social determinants of health and the benefits of considering social health determinants in health promotion research to understand and address health inequities.
