Chapter 6 in Research Handbook on Health Education, Health Promotion and Diversity, 2025, pp 72-87 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
The scientific method is predicated on expanding knowledge generated through rigorous and established methods. Research allows for developing knowledge, disseminating information, and promoting equity and justice, which are critically important in decreasing health disparities. Identifying tools, recommendations, and best practices in conducting research is critical, especially considering the unique necessities of diverse populations present in our societies. This chapter provides recommendations for conducting research with diverse populations, including the LGBTQ+ community, Generation Z and Millennials, and populations with limited language skills. These populations were selected as they represent increasing population segments around the world. Integration of community-based participatory research (CBPR), both in research development and implementation, is paramount in ensuring the representation and consideration of these groups. Ultimately, this chapter aims to build on existing research to provide recommendations for current and future researchers.
