Practicing cultural humility with students of color with disabilities: suggestions for educators

Abstract: Abstract As the student population in the US becomes increasingly diverse, cultural mismatches between educators and students may arise, potentially creating ruptures in trust and mutual understanding. This chapter provides suggestions for how to incorporate culturally humble teaching practices, with a focus on minoritized students with disabilities related to emotional/behavioral functioning. It includes ase examples, role-play scripts, and practical suggestions for enhancing teacher–student relationships. Suggestions are based on evidence of effectiveness in psychotherapy and have been adapted for use in educational settings.
