Meaningful participation in sexual health education for justice system-impacted youth: an entertainment-education and theatre-based approach

Abstract: Incarcerated youth experience disrupted access to sex education, institutionalized control over their bodies, and exposure to harmful carceral ideologies. These young people need educational platforms that reflect their stories authentically and with dignity. Up to Us is an entertainment-education sexual health intervention consisting of a short-film series written by justice system-impacted youth and an interactive theatre-based workshop to foster vulnerability around this typically taboo topic. Data for this chapter come from interviews with Latino male-identifying youth at two reentry centers in Los Angeles County on the film content and workshop quality. Qualitative analysis demonstrates a relationship to Fraser's (2008) justice of redistribution of access through learning from connections between lived realities and film storylines, recognition through the valuing of different identities on screen, and participation through collaborative knowledge construction during workshop activities. The chapter ends with centering critical vulnerability to work toward a rights-based approach to sex education for this population.
