Theorizing social justice in education: a conceptual framework
Dale T. Snauwaert
Chapter 2 in Handbook of Social Justice in Education, 2026, pp 19-33 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
This chapter presents a normative conceptual framework centered around basic questions of justice and the idea of fairness for theorizing social justice in education. The proposed framework is comprised of basic questions of justice: Who Belongs? Whose Truth? Who Gets What? Who Decides? Whose Security? and Whose Resistance? It is proposed that a conception of social justice can be constructed of principled answers to these questions as well as their justification in terms of the basic criteria of fairness. It constitutes a conceptual framework for constructing a conception of social justice in education that specifies what normative considerations need to be considered in constructing a theory of social justice rather than the articulation of a specific theory. It is an attempt to conceptually frame the work of theory construction, which is an urgent matter for the development and assessment of conceptions of educational social justice.
