The Changemaker Project: a case study of social justice education in action

Abstract: In the face of unprecedented global challenges, how might we empower young people to critically examine and take action on social injustice in their own communities? This chapter highlights the work of The Changemaker Project, a nonprofit scheme that has supported thousands of young people around the world to launch social impact projects. The program provides an empathy-based curriculum in which students examine a diverse landscape of social, climate, and racial justice issues, and the spaces of intersection between them. Using Stanford's Design Thinking process, teams of students conduct empathy interviews in their communities to better understand their problems, and—through an iterative process—build high-impact solutions. They then present their ideas for a chance to win seed funding and receive mentorship and support as they launch their projects. This chapter offers a case study example of how social justice education can empower youth to create the future they wish to see.
