Rebooted! Flipped learning in a Human Resource Management classroom

Chapter 6 in Flipping the Classroom with Experiential and Community-Engaged Learning in Business, 2025, pp 89-104 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Abstract: Flipped learning (FL), in which students view lectures at home and engage in homework-like activities in the classroom, is related to positive student learning outcomes and increased motivation and engagement. Nevertheless, as first experienced, FL in a Human Resource Management (HRM) course was a failure. Some students railed against having to teach themselves, while others lacked motivation or developed flipped fatigue and stopped viewing the video lectures. This resulted in low engagement and undermined peer learning during in-class activities. Ultimately, student performance was lower than expectations, and students were dissatisfied with FL. This chapter describes how FL was re-branded as active, engaged learning and paired with a constellation of techniques, using scaffolding from low to high according to Bloom's Taxonomy, to address challenges experienced and provide evidence to support the positive impact of FL techniques on HRM student learning.
