Abstract:
Mindful governance and balanced distribution of power that is aligned with the degree of complexity in family and business systems lie at the core of the success of family enterprises. This article draws upon the power circulation theory from political science to propose a typology of family business governance that integrates the complexity of family and business systems. We build four propositions around characteristics of governance complexities, their dynamic reconfigurations, and influence on financial and non-financial goals of family businesses. Our research extends the understanding of the heterogeneity among family enterprises by governance.
