Chapter 11 in Advancing Corporate Governance Research, 2026, pp 215-237 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
This chapter explores the pivotal role of brave communication in family business succession, focusing on two key principles: daring to express feelings and needs, and daring to actively listen to diverse perspectives. It addresses the inherent communication challenges within family businesses, where emotional intensity, hierarchical structures, culture of secrecy, and conflict avoidance tendency often obstruct open dialogue. The paper outlines common feelings and needs experienced by key family members—predecessors, successors, and family members—during succession, emphasizing the importance of addressing these feelings and psychological needs through courageous communication. By integrating these principles into governance frameworks, family businesses can improve cohesion and ensure smoother transitions. Practical strategies such as family meetings, councils, and independent advisory boards are discussed to enhance succession governance. Additionally, real-life case studies highlight the profound impact of effective communication on family business outcomes. The chapter concludes by proposing future research on the role of vulnerability and active listening in fostering psychological safety and family harmony during succession.
