Chapter 3 in Advancing Corporate Governance Research, 2026, pp 39-50 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: This chapter provides a summary of the key findings and implications from our recent study that examines the rising influence of Generation X directors on corporate boardrooms and firm performance. Analyzing US board composition between 1996 and 2017, we document the entry of Generation X directors into the boardroom, who, by the end of the sample, occupy 22% of board seats. Our findings reveal that firms with Generation X directors exhibit stronger financial performance. Additionally, we find that Generation X directors contribute to value through integrating corporate social responsibility into core strategies, advancing diversity and inclusion, and fostering innovation. Importantly, we distinguish generational identity from age, underscoring the unique perspectives Generation X directors bring, shaped by their formative experiences. These results highlight generational identity as a critical yet overlooked dimension of board diversity, providing valuable insights into corporate governance. The chapter also discusses the broader impact of our study on the corporate governance literature and outlines future research avenues inspired by our findings.
