Chapter Chapter 16 in The Elgar Companion to Consumer Behaviour and the Sustainable Development Goals, 2025, pp 260-273 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
The progress made so far towards Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 12.3, halving food waste by 2050, does not seem sufficient. Governments and companies are still shying away from change. In order to achieve SDG 12, effective measures need to be accelerated at different levels and the actors in the food value chain need to work together, including setting politically favourable framework conditions. The goal of this chapter is to present the transformative potential that engaging citizens as game changers has. Engaging consumers in a scientific endeavour to measure their waste, determine the reasons and interact with science bears great potential in raising awareness, changing habits and reducing food waste. This chapter is based on one citizen science-based project conducted in Germany that aimed at providing insights into the effectiveness of different household food waste reduction measures implemented via a citizen science approach.
