Chapter Chapter 5 in The Elgar Companion to Consumer Behaviour and the Sustainable Development Goals, 2025, pp 73-90 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Successful achievement of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals depends on significant change in the behaviors of consumers concerning what they consume, how they consume, and how much they consume. However, it is taken as given that sustainable consumption choices necessitate a trade-off between what the consumer values and what is best for the environment and society. Thus, behavior can predominantly be a function of the degree to which consumers care about environmental or social issues. This chapter introduces the concept of Consumer Wisdom. The latter describes an approach to consumption that is flexible to different lifestyles yet focuses on consumption habits that maximize a given individual’s well-being while promoting consumers’ generally shared concern for environmental and social stakeholders. The chapter addresses three questions within the context of the Sustainable Development Goals: What is wisdom? What is Consumer Wisdom? What are the opportunities for Consumer Wisdom research and application?
