Embracing emergence: an exercise for the first ten minutes of the first class

Chapter 29 in Annals of Entrepreneurship Education and Pedagogy - 2025, 2025, pp 377-382 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
The human brain automatically finds patterns. This exercise asks pairs of students to guess each other’s next word in a sequence to demonstrate how the brain instinctively makes assumptions, tests those assumptions, and then pivots in order to improve the assumptions. In addition to generating immediate energy and humor in the classroom, this straightforward 20-minute exercise easily introduces management topics like the lean startup method, discovery-driven planning, the equal importance of leadership and followership, and a simplified metaphor for how artificial intelligence operates. Moreover, the exercise requires no student preparation, no physical materials, no calculations, and no complicated debrief.
