International entrepreneurial consulting course

Richard N. Hayes and Lutisha S. Vickerie

Chapter 33 in Annals of Entrepreneurship Education and Pedagogy - 2025, 2025, pp 401-408 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: This chapter discusses the learning objectives and course structure of an International Entrepreneurial Consulting course. The course is operated each spring semester and includes an international trip during the university’s spring break. Using highlights from the first six iterations of the course (South Africa, Israel, Ireland, South Korea, Ghana and the United Kingdom), the chapter provides examples of the pedagogical methods and tools, notably the PESTEL framework, and supplemental materials used to ground students in the environment. In addition, specific consulting tools are described. The authors examine in-person and virtual versions of the course trip and point out specific outcomes and impacts on the client and student. The course challenges both undergraduate and graduate students living in New York to work for entrepreneurs headquartered in a different part of the world and develop strategic plans that address the dynamic socio-economic barriers within the given region.
