Chapter 9 in Handbook on Leadership Education and Impact, 2025, pp 117-131 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
We identify and address seven common measurement challenges and solutions to aid undergraduate leadership education administrators tasked with evaluating and improving program impact. Challenges include choosing the best measures for the right reasons, reducing bias from dominant cultural norms and single perspectives, and implementing effective methods to analyze and manage data and participation over time. We provide realistic solutions and best practices to mitigate each measurement challenge, ranging from crafting a theory of change, collecting data from multiple sources and times, and leveraging artificial intelligence. By integrating evidence-based leader development assessments into undergraduate leadership education, we can empower student leaders to reach their full potential and drive positive societal change.
