Leadership education in postsecondary contexts

Cameron C. Beatty and Johnnie L. Allen

Chapter 16 in Handbook on Leadership Education and Impact, 2025, pp 212-223 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: This chapter explores the dynamic landscape of leadership education within postsecondary institutions, focusing on four key areas that drive the field forward. It synthesizes and interprets themes from existing literature, emphasizing the integration of culturally relevant leadership learning (CRLL) frameworks that challenge traditional Western perspectives. By examining factors such as pedagogy, interdisciplinary approaches, and leadership models like the Multi-Institutional Study of Leadership, the Social Change Model of Leadership Development, and the Social Action, Leadership, and Transformation Model, the chapter highlights potential influences on leadership education outcomes. It also identifies critical gaps in the field, particularly around identity intersections and hegemonic practices, and proposes forward-thinking strategies to advance socially just leadership education. Additionally, the chapter discusses the emerging role of artificial intelligence (AI) in leadership education. Through these insights, the chapter aims to foster innovation and inclusivity in leadership education, addressing the evolving needs of leaders in a globalized context.
