Chapter 17 in Handbook on Leadership Education and Impact, 2025, pp 224-239 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Effective leadership is crucial for successful healthcare teams and organizations, necessitating comprehensive leadership education programs. Various organizations have established leadership development programs to address complex healthcare challenges. This chapter explores current healthcare leadership education by identifying gaps and proposing advancements. Leadership development extends beyond academic settings, impacting teamwork, communication, and patient outcomes. Historical leadership theories evolved from power-centric to team-focused approaches, emphasizing emotional intelligence and social capital. Current frameworks guide leadership education, addressing personal qualities, teamwork, and systems-based practices. To enhance healthcare leadership education, the chapter recommends integrating experiential learning, interdisciplinary collaboration, emotional intelligence, diversity, and technology-enabled learning. Research should focus on innovative educational strategies, assessment tools, and the impact of leadership on healthcare quality and safety. These insights aim to improve leadership education programs and research, fostering effective healthcare leaders capable of navigating the complexities of the evolving healthcare landscape.
