Abstract:
Our leaders in government face a permanent churn of issues, events, and circumstances that they need to negotiate and address with examples including a global pandemic, economic uncertainty, rising violence at home and abroad, the impacts of climate change, and the shift toward a more polarized political environment. Public service leadership, whether elected, appointed, or career, is complex and requires a deeper set of skills to effectively serve and meet the needs of its increasingly diverse constituency and workforce. Effective leadership, therefore, is crucial to navigate these complexities and ensure that government agencies operate efficiently and responsively. Investing in leader development within the federal workforce is essential for success in this new environment, yet conventional models for leadership education are insufficient. We call for a new educational and developmental model for leadership education in the civic and political sector.
