Chapter 1 in Handbook on Leadership Education and Impact, 2025, pp 6-22 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
This chapter reviews the historical roots of leadership education, with a primary focus on youth leadership in higher education. Rather than presenting a definitive timeline of the evolution of youth leadership education, we suggest some of the many significant people, programs, and associations that coalesced across four waves of leadership education. As history is largely dependent on who tells the story, we interrogate how forces of colonization, Western imperialism, white supremacy, and neoliberalism shape the dominant historical narratives of leadership, and suggest that it is time to acknowledge multiple overlapping waves of youth leadership educations.
