Leadership education in military studies

Michael Kirchner and Michael D. Vick

Chapter 19 in Handbook on Leadership Education and Impact, 2025, pp 259-268 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: Military veterans participate in leadership education throughout their term of service. Beginning in basic training, service members are exposed to leadership training, and as their careers advance, additional formal leadership education opportunities are offered. The leadership education provided by the military influences civilian employers’ perceptions of veterans as leaders. Despite veterans’ prescribed leadership skills, leadership education in the US military is often overlooked as a development tool for civilian education organizations. In this chapter, we examine the historical origins of military leadership education and its role in shaping training and development in civilian organizations. We continue by reviewing the branches of services’ structured system. Next, we consider how the US military systematically develops its members’ leadership capacity through structured programming and clearly defined values. We conclude by offering scholars and practitioners implications and corresponding propositions, which serve as a guide toward furthering the advancement of leadership education and its impact.
