A critical examination of leadership learning and development in STEM education

Natasha T. Turman and Darren E. Pierre

Chapter 20 in Handbook on Leadership Education and Impact, 2025, pp 269-279 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: The conversation on leadership education on college campuses continues to evolve and expand. With this growth comes the need for educators to examine their practice to ensure effectiveness in preparing students to lead within college and beyond. The question has often been posed: leadership for what? Leadership for whom? Educators must continue to consider the latter part of that inquiry in contemporary leadership development spaces. In this chapter, we respond to the question of “who” by examining specifically how leadership education occurs for undergraduate STEM majors. In today's society, leadership is a pivotal competency needed by STEM majors to be competitive in the marketplace. The diverse fields that comprise STEM are critical contributors to the innovation, research, design, and overall function of the world in which we live. This necessitates sound leadership that is nuanced, critical, and primed to solve the biggest and most important issues of our times.
