Leadership education in arts organizations

William Southerland and Markell Terrell Caradine

Chapter 21 in Handbook on Leadership Education and Impact, 2025, pp 280-292 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: This chapter summarizes existing literature pertaining to leadership theory in arts organizations, focusing on the distinct roles of administrative and artistic leadership. It explores the prevalence of dual leadership structures, the challenges of balancing artistic vision with financial realities, and the need for shared leadership skills. The chapter also analyzes leadership styles in orchestras and identifies opportunities for further research, such as comparing leadership across art forms and organizational types. Ultimately, the chapter highlights the complex nature of arts leadership and the need for more empirical research to support leadership education in this context. We conclude the chapter with a recommendation for future research and an exhortation to practitioners and scholars alike to consider research into arts management leadership a high priority.
