Chapter 25 in Handbook on Leadership Education and Impact, 2025, pp 324-331 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Amid unprecedented wealth and leadership transfers in US history, community-based leadership education is primed to impact community vitality efforts. Community-based leadership education recognizes community leadership as belonging to the community as opposed to the individual, yet most research in community leadership development has only documented individual-level effects. The issue may be rooted in situating community leadership development within broader community complexity, but it may also be a function of poorly designed community-based leadership education initiatives. Through this chapter, shortcomings of previous community leadership development practice and research are acknowledged, and forward-thinking propositions that advance community-based leadership education to address community leadership as systems – not individuals in programs – are discussed. As a result of this chapter, community-based leadership education will be better poised to establish leadership ecosystems that build more robust community leadership capacity and culture.
