Chapter 29 in Handbook on Leadership Education and Impact, 2025, pp 365-379 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Leadership educators play a valuable role in not only equipping individuals to engage in leadership but also motivating a wider array of diverse individuals to pursue these aims. An important aspect that can encourage greater leadership learning is self-concept. In this chapter, we explore what self-concept is, how it relates to leadership and leadership development, and what leadership educators should take into consideration to better engage self-concept in educational interventions. While the interplay of leadership and self-concept has been explored before in the literature, we hope the literature synthesis, applied critical lenses, and pragmatic recommendations in this chapter add to the conversation on this topic and provide educators with new insights for leadership education efforts.
