Abstract:
Storying our “intellectual homieship” through our collaboration across three learning environments within and adjacent to K–12 education, we advance fundamental knowledge while positioning emergent and future contributions about cultivating access and opportunity in leadership education. This chapter contributes unique insights into leadership education—offering a theoretical framework grounded in justice-oriented pedagogies. We theorize that living and embodying justice-oriented pedagogies is leadership education. By planting seeds for educational justice, we understand justice-oriented pedagogies as an extension of leadership education, disrupting multiple forms and enactments of oppression. We call on leadership educators to consider interventions grounded in humanizing and ethical commitments, such as freedom dreaming and co-design, to cultivate leadership learning through axiological innovations. These interventions are fundamental to how justice-oriented pedagogies can expand leadership education beyond human capital development, yielding individual and collective agentic changemakers, sensemakers, and enactors toward equitable and just realities.
