Chapter 31 in Handbook on Leadership Education and Impact, 2025, pp 396-409 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Situated within the context of leadership education in higher education and informed by scholarship on college student development, this chapter focuses on developmental considerations for leadership learning. By centering identity (individual/social identities and leadership identity), the authors present a model that includes five developmental constructs central to leadership learning: (a) cognition, (b) motivation, (c) readiness, (d) efficacy, and (e) capacity. Each of the five constructs is discussed with a focus on identity. The chapter concludes with reflective questions across the five constructs for leadership educators to consider as they continue to evolve and enhance their leadership education practice.
