Chapter 32 in Handbook on Leadership Education and Impact, 2025, pp 410-423 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Co-curricular leadership education is integral to fostering societal progress and is a tool for upholding equity across communities. Existing literature has demonstrated that co-curricular leadership education can play out differently across the postsecondary (higher education) and secondary (K–12 education) tiers of education. This chapter will 1) define co-curricular leadership education across both tiers of education, 2) identify the ways in which co-curricular experiences improve student outcomes in leadership education, and 3) highlight opportunities for expanding access for historically underrepresented groups. Furthermore, this chapter will demonstrate the need for an expansive definition of co-curricular experiences that encompass the rich learning opportunities in leadership education, with a focus on tangible efforts that drive innovation, enrichment, and involvement.
