The power of dialogue in leadership education

Bridget Turner Kelly, Ben Parks and Abigail Williams-Yee

Chapter 33 in Handbook on Leadership Education and Impact, 2025, pp 424-433 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: Intergroup dialogue has a direct role in leadership development. However, this role is rarely described in literature or in practice. The purpose of this chapter is to describe the key role intergroup dialogue plays in developing leaders for democracy and equity. Through personal stories of intergroup dialogue being paired with leadership education, empirical literature linking the two concepts, and best practices, this chapter makes a case for advancing the integration of intergroup dialogue into leadership education. The chapter defines intergroup dialogue and distinguishes it from other forms of communication (e.g., debate, discussion, and conversation). Critical leadership education is unpacked, and the chapter concludes with future trends for leadership educators.
