Abstract:
Leadership paradigms have shifted from a traditional, positional focus to a process-oriented approach that occurs in all spaces and places. However, leadership education is widely implemented in higher education and organizational contexts and remains inaccessible to many, restricted by financial barriers and the lack of leadership focus in secondary education. Limiting leadership education to formal programs risks excluding potential leaders, a problem given global concerns over leadership shortages. Therefore, we advocate for expanding leadership education beyond the classroom, promoting a holistic “both/and” approach that values curricular and non-curricular contexts, as well as formal and informal leadership learning. Ultimately, we seek to enhance inclusivity, foster more comprehensive and effective leadership development, and expand the boundaries of where we, as leadership educators, perceive leadership education happens.
