Abstract:
The purpose of leadership education is to equip learners to lead effectively in increasingly interconnected and complex local and global environments. Commitment to this purpose requires a leadership curriculum that draws from diverse knowledge systems, enabling learners to comprehend and use various leadership concepts and practices. However, most leadership programs rely on Western scholarship, curriculum, and pedagogy. This reliance results in a Western bias in leadership education and marginalizes other knowledge systems, particularly those from the Global South. Addressing and moving beyond this Western bias is both a necessary and urgent task for the leadership education community. Our chapter proposes three approaches to facilitate this shift: adopting a mindset of global curiosity, embracing hybridity, and committing to stewardship of leadership education as a shared space. By leveraging these orientations, overcoming Western bias becomes less of an abstract concept and more of an actionable, urgent transformation that is within reach.
