Abstract:
While scholarship that advocates for a critical approach to leadership education remains a nascent area of study, important efforts have been made over the last decade to challenge dominant ways of thinking and engaging in leadership education and learning. Though essential to advancing the conversation around equity in leadership education, one commonality between these lines of inquiry is their grounding in the work of leadership scholars and educators. In this chapter, we invert the approach, centering critical theory and then applying it to leadership praxis. The purpose of this inversion is to explore how leadership education, theory, and practice shift when viewed through a critical lens. Specifically, we focus on the application of three strands of critical theory: TribalCrit, Black Feminist Thought, and LatCrit, and explore how leadership educators can apply each in reimagining their curriculum, andragogy, and reflections on student learning through a critical lens.
