Implementing a social justice-focused project to build research skills

Chapter 12 in Teaching Social Psychology, 2024, pp 150-161 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
This chapter describes a semester-long, social justice-focused project in which students build research skills, practice public speaking and apply social psychological concepts to real-world issues. In this chapter, I discuss the rationale for including a project such as this in undergraduate social psychology courses and provide a detailed description of the project, with an eye toward helping both new social psychology instructors and veteran instructors to implement a similar project in their own classes. I also discuss considerations for implementing the project in various contexts, including how to integrate a project like this into an existing class structure, how to scale the project up or down based on class size, and alternative options for presenting final projects.
