Building and sharing self-knowledge

Chapter 15 in Teaching Social Psychology, 2024, pp 186-198 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Social psychology instructors can incorporate an interview assignment into their course to help students achieve many of the five APA (2023) goals for undergraduate psychology majors. Using concepts within the Self chapter, students build a better understanding of their own self-concept and biases to improve their own knowledge and personal development. Then, students take that knowledge and share what they’ve learned with a person outside the classroom as they discover details about the person’s self-concept and self-esteem strategies. Students reflect on their interview experience by sharing a video presentation with the class and engaging in peer discussion. Through this task, students improve their understanding of course concepts, demonstrate ethical and effective communication and community building, practice project management and widen their comfort with the use of technology. This chapter discusses the parameters for instructors to implement this interview assessment and details learning outcomes that can be achieved through completion of the activity.
