Abstract:
We discuss how principles from positive psychology can be integrated to create an inclusive and effective learning environment in social psychology classrooms. Specifically, we review Seligman’s (2011) PERMA theory, an evidence-based framework that promotes wellbeing and is comprised of five intrinsically rewarding factors that can be independently pursued. Positive emotions such as joy, hope, compassion and gratitude can help overcome negative experiences and foster resiliency. Engagement with experiences allows individuals to reach a mindful state of flow and improve performance. Relationships with others who care for and support us can prolong our physical and psychological health. Meaning, or finding purpose in life, can remind us of what is most important in the face of adversity. Accomplishment encourages students to rely on their strengths and have a sense of mastery and pride in their goal pursuit. We share research related to these elements and provide activities that can enhance student flourishing.
