Chapter 8 in Handbook of Social Psychology and Consumer Behavior, 2026, pp 100-114 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Impression management involves trying to influence how others perceive you. While this concept has been studied for many decades, social media, online review platforms, and other digital communication tools have made the impressions we create more visible and abundant than ever before. Digital environments offer new tools and opportunities, but also pose new challenges for shaping and managing others’ perceptions. This is true for everyday consumers sharing their lives on social media or posting reviews about their consumption experiences, for social media influencers developing a personal brand identity, and for brands interacting with consumers and managing their reputation online. In this chapter, we delve into the past decade of research to understand how everyday consumers, influencers, and brands manage impressions in the digital age.
