Chapter Chapter 26 in Case Studies on Nonprofit Resilience Management, 2025, pp 209-217 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
This case describes how the BET Community Fund in the state of New York adapted to the realities of the COVID-19 pandemic and reinvented itself to become a more nimble, relevant organization by undertaking a community needs assessment in collaboration with a four-year university in the region. The case starts by describing the historical context of the Community Fund, and the demographics of the diverse communities served, and then it explains the crisis faced and the process and design of the community needs assessment undertaken. It also highlights the powerful collaborative process of community engaged research which incorporates input from the people and organizations that the research outcomes will impact as equal partners in the research process. The case further provides an account of the carry-on impacts of this project which have reached throughout the county and resulted in additional funding related to the needs assessed. Implications for community funds, nonprofit organizations, organizational leaders, and academic researchers are ultimately discussed.
