Florida Coalition Against Domestic Violence

Reagan Anderson and Kimberly K. Wiley

Chapter Chapter 27 in Case Studies on Nonprofit Resilience Management, 2025, pp 218-227 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: Ethical nonprofit management is vital to maintaining public trust in the nonprofit sector. Secrecy between the nonprofit board of directors and the chief executive officer (CEO) can cause mismanagement and unethical behavior. In this case, a nonprofit’s massive budget, operational scope, and leadership role greatly contrasted with its dysfunction and mismanagement. Unfortunately, this nonprofit did not survive. Information silos created by the CEO led to its downfall. In August 2021, the Florida Department of Children and Families and Florida’s Office of Attorney General settled pending civil actions with Florida Coalitions Against Domestic Violence for more than $5 million and required the nonprofit to dissolve. This case examines this forced closure through the lens of information asymmetry and the principal-agent problem and the ethical conditions required for long term resilience.
