Chapter Chapter 2 in Case Studies on Nonprofit Resilience Management, 2025, pp 27-35 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
When the pandemic closures happened in March 2020, New York City’s chair of the prestigious Cultural Institutions Group, Taryn Sacramone, started a daily call at 3 p.m., which grew into a lifeline for over 800 nonprofit arts and culture leaders during the pandemic shutdown. They called it “Culture@3” and decided to make it a self-governing “space” where leaders provided and received emotional support, learned how to apply for pandemic relief programs, and shared strategies for managing deep revenue losses. In May 2020, when the pandemic shutdown was still in effect and Black Lives Matter protests erupted after the murder of Mr. George Floyd, the city council planned budget cuts that would affect city grants for arts and culture organizations including the Coalition of Theaters of Color. Culture@3 was challenged to coordinate collective action to support the Coalition of Theaters of Colors when participants were focused on how budget cuts would impact their organizations. This case study focuses on the strategic choices made in developing Culture@3 and how those choices successfully created an environment that facilitated trust, collaboration, and coordination among diverse arts and culture organizations. Culture@3 built resilience amid unprecedented uncertainty and stress.
