Abstract:
In 2011, The Detroit Science Center, one of Detroit’s most prominent cultural institutions, announced a temporary closure that left donors, stakeholders, patrons and the entire city stunned. The closure, which was originally scheduled to last two weeks, was brought about by a combination of mismanagement, lack of board oversight, and extreme financial pressures. Amidst a series of lawsuits from creditors and donors, a team of community and philanthropic leaders launched an innovative plan to purchase the organization’s assets out of bankruptcy and to re-open the museum. Now, more than ten years later, the re-named Michigan Science Center stands as an important case study of nonprofit resilience.
