Founder Syndrome at Metro Arts and Film

Chapter Chapter 5 in Case Studies on Nonprofit Resilience Management, 2025, pp 49-58 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Metro Arts and Film (MAF) has a long history of community work in Metro City. MAF was a product of Chris McKinley’s vision to establish a multi-faceted arts organization in Metro City in the late 1980s. MAF’s programming included instruction in filmmaking, still photography, videotaping, and emerging recording mediums. In the 1990s MAF expanded rapidly as a result of a National Endowment grant, but that support was lost in the early 2000s. After firing its visionary founding director and hiring a new all-business executive director, MAF’s largely uninvolved board found itself facing a big budget cut. After tumultuous deliberations, MAF’s board decided to close the organization and distribute its programs rather than stay in business and rebuild.
