Playhouse Square Foundation

Dennis R. Young and Art J. Falco

Chapter Chapter 6 in Case Studies on Nonprofit Resilience Management, 2025, pp 59-63 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: Playhouse Square (PSQ) in Cleveland, Ohio, is the second-largest performing arts center in the United States, operating 12 venues, hosting eight resident companies, and overseeing a downtown district which includes businesses and residences. The COVID-19 pandemic forced PSQ to cancel all performances and close its theaters from March 2020 until June 2021, experiencing a significant loss of ticket revenues. A combination of a strong balance sheet, cost reductions, and diversified sources of income enabled it to emerge from the pandemic in strong financial health.
