Critical work and organizational psychology: organizing an emergent critical field

Abstract: This chapter introduces the handbook and presents a narrative that contextualizes its composition. In the following, we provide a background of the need for, and emergence of, critical work and organizational (W-O) psychology, from early critical voices within the broader W-O psychology discipline to increasing growth and consolidation, related to the role of the “Future of Work and Organizational Psychology” (FoWOP) initiative and allied trends in critical, feminist, decolonial, and other alternative academic movements. In our discussion, we focus on critical and radically humanistic perspectives on existing debates, the uncovering of implicit dynamics within the field, and the aim of promoting emancipatory W-O psychology, focused particularly on the subject and subjectivities embedded within societal, cultural, and historical contexts. The chapter also provides an overview of the various parts of this edited volume and closes with some remarks regarding the experiences and hopes of the editorial collective for the reception and future uses of this handbook.
