Critical perspectives on quantitative methods and measurement in work and organizational psychology

Abstract: Quantitative methods and measurement have been central to work and organizational psychology scholarship. Nevertheless, qualitative and critical perspectives have noted difficulties in quantifying work psychology processes and proposed alternative epistemological and methodological approaches. Less developed, however, are critical perspectives in quantification, emergent in social studies of quantification, which can be fruitfully applied to the domain of work and organizational psychology. The current chapter examines critical perspectives on quantitative methods and measurement, drawing insights from this emergent literature to examine the diverse ways in which critical scholarship can engage with quantitative approaches. I propose that such approaches can go beyond the traditional “qualitative–quantitative” divide to critically examine processes of quantification both in terms of their limits and their possibilities.
