Reflexivity on research ethics

Abstract: This chapter proposes three streams of reflection for work and organizational (W-O) psychology to address possible shortcomings in research and practice. The first stream addresses the distinction between a psychology to/about versus a psychology with/for people. A psychology with/for workers begins theory and practice with lived experiences. It is suggested that such reflexivity also requires knowledge of neoliberal capitalism and its psychosocial consequences. Using examples from W-O psychology, the second stream of reflection addresses the differentiation of pragmatic, ethical, and moral reason, making the case that a thinking that is generalizable, systemic, and principle-oriented should not be abandoned. In the final stream, it is argued that equity, diversity, and inclusion are not just organizational values but epistemic research principles that should guide research. They are addressed systematically, drawing on classical philosophy of science, in the contexts of discovery, justification, interpretation, and translation. Finally, it is argued that critical reflexivity must discuss in a meta-theoretical fashion the power to ask for or ignore reflexivity. A vision for a reflexive W-O that is international, democratic, and moral is laid out.
