Affect and information processing in groups

Abstract: Affective experiences such as mood and emotion are an enormous part of daily life. Affect also has a range of effects on individual behavior and cognition. Over the last several decades, researchers have examined the impact such effects have on group and team states and outcomes such as intra-group conflict, social integration, and group or team performance on various tasks. After providing an overview of the literature on affect and cognition in individuals and on the literature on affect and group and team outcomes and states, the current chapter discusses recent models of affect and information processing in groups and teams and findings regarding affect on aspects of information processing in groups, particularly on information sharing and use. Based on the literature reviewed, the chapter offers several suggestions for future research.
