Transactive memory development in the emerging digital environment: opportunities and challenges

Abstract: Emerging technologies (e.g., social technology platforms, artificial intelligence) are increasingly being adopted in organizations, transforming how work teams manage their collective knowledge. Transactive memory system (TMS), a classic concept of group cognition, has long served as a dominant framework for understanding how group members learn “who knows what” and use that metaknowledge to create an efficient and effective system of learning, storing, and coordinating collective knowledge. We argue that two critical phenomena in modern teams in the emerging digital environment—(1) fluid team boundaries and membership, and (2) human-AI teaming—call for a fundamental rethinking of team cognition, particularly challenging the original theorization of TMS development. By drawing on the literature on TMS and emerging technologies, we theorize how the two phenomena prevalent in the digital collaborative environment present both opportunities and challenges in the core processes of TMS development.
